Business Intelligence Manager

About the role


The Business Intelligence Manager is responsible for leading and managing the BI Development team specializing in the design and development of reports, dashboards, and analytics tools within Pontoon’s Business Intelligence environment. The Business Intelligence Manager will oversee the end-to-end delivery for the BI development team. This will include partnering with BI Advisors, stakeholders, and other team members to understand their business goals and needs, translate user requirements to data requirements and guide BI developers to create dashboards and visualizations within our Power BI environment. This is a people leader role responsible for empowering BI Developers to develop high quality BI tools that effectively meets business needs.

The manager will lead BI team as the resident technical expert of Power BI tools, business data and VMS/ATS operational systems. Manage employees including, but not limited to, recruiting, hiring, onboarding, develop and facilitate team training, mentoring, coaching, communicating goals, reviewing work, and managing employee performance. Work closely with the EDW team to provide data warehouse requirements, perform QA and UAT of EDW data to ensure that all necessary data points and data sets are available for the BI Team. Prepare SOPs, training material, data dictionary and other documentation as needed. Act as a point of escalation for internal and external customers. Execute the strategic vision of the BI Leadership, manage team’s workload and be accountable for continuous improvement.

What you’ll be doing


• Manage a global team of Business Intelligence Developers with responsibilities that include day-to-day management, work planning, prioritization, work review, coaching, mentoring, goal setting, and performance management.

• Coach and develop the team to maximize individual performance, enhance teamwork, provide guidance to team members, and set attainable goals for each team member. Monitor, evaluate, and ensure the completion of tasks and projects.

• Collaborate with the team to improve existing processes and develop new and better ways of working.

• Serve as a functional and technical SME for all BI tools and solutions. Participate in the full development life cycle, end-to-end, from design, implementation, testing, documentation, delivery, support, and maintenance. Manage all aspects of BI deliverables from project inception to implementation and resource oversight.

• Able to identify data quality issues across various BI dashboards and tools and propose prompt solution. Ensure quality of final BI deliverables exceeds customer expectations.

• Expertise creating dashboards in Power BI. Experience using Power Query, DAX expressions, Metadata model, Desktop Reports, Power BI Services, Publishing of reports required.

• Deal with escalations and sets expectations with internal and external customers. Communicates reporting status and informs issues to appropriate stakeholders.

• Demonstrate project leadership by communicating with project stakeholders in a timely manner to discuss the status of deliverables, shared issues, end-user concerns, and upcoming milestones.

• Assists BI leadership with execution of BI roadmap and strategic vision. Manage multiple projects at once. Take ownership of problems, propose solutions, and either take ownership for their resolution or ensure a clear hand-off to the right owner.

• Generates ideas for continuous improvement and innovation of the business intelligence platform to Pontoon leadership and drive efforts to further enable analytics capabilities throughout the organization.

• Deliver best in class BI solutions by recommending best practices. Ensure that BI dashboards and reports build are scalable, repeatable, and top-notch quality.

• Liaison between BI advisors and EDW team. Provide data requirements to the EDW team and ensure that the data in the EDW meets quality standards. Qualify the business need of each request and acts as a SME to partner on the EDW solutions.

• Leverage an agile work environment. Utilizes ticketing system and Jira to manage, monitor and track all development requests. Promote the use of scrums/daily standups to manage daily roadblocks.

• Write, review, and revise project requirements and specifications. Creates and maintains comprehensive project documentation, SOPs, ERD diagrams, data dictionaries, process maps and other documentation as necessary.

• Assists with any necessary change management to support adoption of new reporting / analytics.

• Participates in special projects and performs other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION & JOB REQUIREMENTS:


• Bachelor’s degree in data analytics, data science, computer science, information systems, math or related field. Master’s is desirable but not required.

• Minimum 5 years professional business experience with Power BI required.

• Minimum 3 years of people management experience leading others required.

• Proficiency with planning and executing large complex projects. Project Management experience desired.

• Deep understanding of normalized and dimensional data modeling techniques, data mapping, information visualization, information modeling, and data warehousing techniques.

• Prior RPO / MSP / Staffing experience preferred. Experience with VMS tools, such as Fieldglass, Beeline, and/or ATS tools, such as BrassRing, PeopleFluent, Avature, Taleo, or SuccessFactors, strongly desired but not required.

• Must be able to multi-task, prioritize, delegate, and foster the development of a high-performing offshore/onsite development team.

• Lead/support an environment driven by customer service and teamwork.

• Good problem-solving skills and attention to detail.

• Proven analytical thinking for translating data into informative visuals and reports.

• Ability to prioritize and perform multiple work assignments simultaneously while meeting assigned deadlines.

• The candidate must be able to roll up their sleeves and work directly with data.
